"Technology has always been my passion and it has now become my career."

Kayleigh Williams-Rands

Apprentice Service Engineer

My interest in technology started from when I used to watch my older brother take apart computers and then I started to do the same myself. Since then, Technology has always been my passion and it has now become my career. At school, the teachers were very encouraging about my choice of career as it’s a path that is rarely chosen by girls and I am lucky to now have the same support through my apprenticeship. I love how much technology expands and how much it has developed already since I started studying.

I work on the Application Support Desk within our National Software and Service Delivery division. I support customers using products such as Safetynet which is our internet filtering service for Schools. Safetynet stops students accessing specific sites and allows schools to control what they are viewing. Our customers are schools and I like that we are helping them to do the right thing.

I am studying for a Level 3 Infrastructure Apprenticeship and I am really enjoying the apprenticeship. I get to attend training alongside working and it’s a great way to build a future career. My training provider has an online portal, Canvas, through which I can access my modules and course materials. You can log in whenever suits you and complete your work. I enjoy doing the daily quizzes and using them to challenge myself.

My team have also been very supportive. They are all always ready to help me if I need support with customer issues. The role has really broadened my skills and allowed me to apply my learning in a more practical way.
