"RM is a listed company so I knew I’d get some really interesting variety from the role but it was also small enough that it offered a lot of accountability and opportunities to develop."

Group Reporting Manager

I joined RM as the Group Reporting Manager two years ago having completed my accountancy training at Grant Thornton, which was great as it gave me exposure to a variety of different businesses and approaches that really built my confidence, but I was looking for a company I could build my career in and I saw RM as somewhere that would allow me to do just that. I could see it was an organisation with a great culture and a really supportive environment. The size of the business appealed to me along with it being in the Education sector which is something I am passionate about. RM is a listed company so I knew I’d get some really interesting variety from the role but it was also small enough that it offered a lot of accountability and opportunities to develop.

I am responsible for the Group’s reporting and I manage the external audit we complete for the business both at the half year and year end with KPMG. The outputs of this work are reported to the City so it directly contributes to the results that drive the Company’s share price. I get the opportunity to work very closely with our Chief Financial Officer and I attend the Audit Committee Board meetings. This gives me some great exposure to senior internal and external stakeholders and allows me to hear about RM’s future strategy and some of the decisions that affect the company. I also get a good insight as to how RM is perceived externally.

I am also part of the internal committee that is responsible for our Defined Benefit Pension Scheme. I work with the Board of Trustees who are mostly external to RM and from varied backgrounds. It’s really interesting as I get to see things often from a non-finance view and I get involved in strategy work, in particular thinking about the pension scheme in the wake of Brexit. Recently I was involved in the decision to change our pension provider which was particularly rewarding in terms of the impact this had for all of the people we currently have in the scheme. We identified a provider who would give the members of the scheme great customer service and have subsequently received a significant cost saving for the Group. I enjoyed driving a change that would make such a difference to the people involved.

I was also fortunate enough to be involved in the largest acquisition in RM’s history, the Education and Care business of Connect Group that became part of our RM Resources business.

My role has grown since I first started and I now manage a small team. The Finance team is split between the UK and India and I have loved having the opportunity to travel to our office in Trivandrum regularly. The team there are extremely vibrant and enthusiastic to improve and I’ve enjoyed informally mentoring some of them and watching individuals develop. RM has a real belief that you should manage and drive your career and I’m passionate about developing myself and others. I am mentored by our HR Director who helps me to focus on managing the different dynamics of the business and gives me advice about how to get the best out of my team. I have also had a lot of support from my CFO and line manager, both in terms of one on one career sessions and I am also part of a small development group who meet regularly to discuss a variety of strategic topics that help us to think and act differently a key members of the Corporate Services function.

I am proud to work for a company that has such a caring culture, I am surrounded by people who really believe in what RM does and the difference the organisation makes in the Education sector.
