I’ve been at RM for 9 years and started on the Graduate Scheme as a Project Manager. I moved into my first management position within 18 months of starting at RM and I’ve subsequently progressed into a variety of management roles since.
I currently work as a Relationship Manager in RM Education, I am accountable for our top tier of Managed Service customers and I work with senior school leaders in 20 Secondary Schools and 11 Primary Schools across London to ensure that an excellent service is delivered. I am responsible for the contracts, the people we have based onsite, the strategic relationship with the schools and I have ownership of the P&L. The Managing Director of RM Education describes the role as being like a ‘mini MD’ of your own business and he is explicitly clear about how critical our roles are to the success of RM Education.
Becoming a Relationship Manager has enabled me to transition from a Manager to a Leader. It has allowed me to become more of a vision setter. I head up an RM team of 25 with 2 Operations Managers reporting directly to me. They are responsible for managing a group of Customer Support Engineers who are largely based onsite within the schools that we manage. It’s really motivating to see the impact you can have with a powerful team of people behind you.
It’s a brilliant role that allows me to bring together a variety of specialisms that I’ve developed at RM over the years. I love how close I am to the front line of everything that RM Education does, I get to see the impact that the products and services we provide make to my schools every day. It makes you feel like you’re really under the skin of what we’re here to achieve for our customers. We have seen huge amounts of investment in our learning & development to help support us in our roles as Relationship Managers including a general management programme specifically designed and delivered in partnership with Cranfield University.
One of my biggest achievements is the relationship I’ve managed to build with Westminster City School. The school had previously had a Managed Service with a competitor and were left in a bit of a mess when the service with them came to an end. At the start of our relationship I was onsite almost daily to ensure we were understanding and resolving all of their problems. It was important to me to form a close partnership with Westminster, I built trust by ensuring that we were continuously delivering on our commitments. 18 months down the line and we have completely evolved their service and they now use me as their point of contact for all of the strategic decisions they make in regards to ICT. We have worked together to develop a strategy and vision that ensures we have a constant focus on the schools long term future.
I am proud to work for RM because of the impact I see us having on teaching and learning every day. For example, I am about to visit Tuke School, a Special School that has some fantastic technology including an amazing immersive environment. I am welcomed into the school as if I am part of the team because of the impact we have there. As much as we’re here to satisfy our shareholders and employees the most important impact we have is with our customers.
