"There’s such satisfaction when you see customers and students using the technology."

Project Manager, RM Education

When I started on the RM graduate scheme, I joined the Project Management Office to learn more about RM as a business, our customers and the nature of the projects we deliver to education.

Less than a year later I found myself assigned to my first large implementation project at a big academy in the south-west. RM sourced a flat for me and I moved to Dorset for the summer. This was a real chance to prove myself, particularly since RM had a positive relationship with this school.

Building work at the school had been delayed, which severely impacted our timescales. With these projects the completion date is set in stone. The school had to be accessible, with working technology, from the beginning of term, and the responsibility for ensuring that happened sat with me. What’s more, the solution included 300 PCs, cashless catering, AV in 15 classrooms, extension on the network infrastructure and telephony.

I had to manage relationships with all stakeholders, and be creative about what we could do. There was real team effort and we managed to get the school up and running in time. I love seeing a school go live and there is such a sense of satisfaction when you see customers and students using the technology. It gave me a massive confidence boost and I really think it helped to build my credibility within the business.

Since then, I’ve begun managing a team and the projects we’re handling are increasingly complex. Schools are really innovative in their use of ICT. This summer my team have been overseeing a whole Google solution implementation into a school.

I’ve continually been challenged here. There’s always someone pushing you to achieve the next level, but in a really supportive atmosphere with an approachable senior management team.
