"Doing a degree as an apprentice is great because it enhances what I am learning in my job but it also challenges me with things I wouldn’t otherwise learn."
I joined RM 8 months ago as a Customer Support Engineer in the Managed Services Division. Alongside my role, I am also doing a Degree Apprenticeship in Digital and Technology Solutions.
When I first joined, I worked in a few schools and spent time with other Engineers learning about the RM systems and seeing them used in different ways. This definitely helped me to progress quickly within my own role and has also allowed me the opportunity to gain some experience in being the sole engineer in a school. I am responsible for managing that school’s IT and have recently started to take on extra responsibilities such as doing quotes for new equipment. I work closely with the Senior Leadership Team within the school and have a built a really good working relationship with them. What I love about my job is helping the teachers and making a difference within the school.
I have been involved in a couple of projects since I joined including an audit of equipment which was carried out during the summer break, this involved managing my time independently to ensure all the required tasks was completed. I also joined in on a project which involved a rollout of a MIS system on mobile devices and created a guide on how to set up.
For my apprenticeship, I attend training in various modules and my favourite so far is IT Security Principles. Doing a degree as an apprentice is great because it enhances what I am learning in my job but it also challenges me with things I wouldn’t otherwise learn.
RM have been incredibly supportive of me not just in supporting me through the Apprenticeship but in enabling me to do my job well. The support from my Line Manager and engineers in my team has allowed me to progress quickly within the role. I have a real sense of accomplishment at what I have achieved so far.
