Just a year and a half after joining RM’s marketing team, Karen Wilson talks about her experience co-managing the largest virtual event RM has ever hosted.
Following my desire for a career change, I joined RM in September 2019 as a Marketing Executive, with little prior experience of marketing, following a long career in sales. Having only been in the job for 6 months when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, I was nervous about how it would impact on my role and my career development at RM. I needn’t have worried – not only was I able to take ownership of some big projects while my colleagues were furloughed, I was also able to prove my abilities and earn a promotion during that year.
Thanks to those opportunities and the learnings gained, in March 2021 I was asked to co-manage the first ever RM EduSummit – a global virtual event for the education sector, hosting 22 live sessions across 3 full days, with a range of internal and external industry experts speaking.
Joining forces with another part of the RM group, and planning, developing, and executing such an ambitious event, was by far the biggest challenge and learning curve I’ve faced in my time here at RM. From gaining knowledge of the wider RM business and meeting so many great industry specialists, to leveraging our social engagement, seeing the great feedback from our customers, and even learning a bit of code to build the custom website - It was a fantastic experience!
