I started at RM twelve years ago, after contracting for the year previous via a third party. I initially joined as a Senior Support Consultant and continued in this role until an opportunity came up to take on an interim role of Field Team Supervisor. This wasn’t a permanent move but gave me the opportunity to step into line management for a while, and served as a stepping stone to a permanent role as a Field Technical Team Leader. During career planning I had been advised that I needed to focus either on line management or a more technical role, so when this role became available, I thought that it was ideal. It was a hybrid role, allowing me to continue with both elements. During this role I was able to obtain experience of line management as I was leading a team of 14 engineers, but also keep my hand in with the technical work as well.
After a couple of years the role changed and I moved into a Technical Operations Manager role for a Trust, comprising 10 schools, spread across 11 sites. This was another step up as the role involved both the technical ownership (as the support consultant for the Trust) as well as the operational responsibility for the schools. It was my responsibility to maintain our contractual obligations and maintain excellent levels of service. I enjoyed how varied the role was, as there was always something going on. I was fortunate to be part of a very strong team and have a dedicated pool of engineers. The relationship with the Trust is also excellent. They really want to work with us, as their trusted advisor, and we recently worked together to create a detailed strategy and vision plan for each school, as well as the Trust overall. As a result we have been able to complete a number of projects including the deployment of a remote teaching solution during Covid. We now have Teams fully integrated, with synchronisation via their MIS, and operating as a pivotal part of the teaching and learning culture within the schools. We have also migrated all of their schools on to a new ISP for improved internet connection and filtering.
I have now moved back to a fully technical role as a Technical Architect. This involves working on bid responses and new product introduction, as well as complex project ownership and delivery. My previous roles helped me to understand where I wanted to progress my career in terms of technical or line management and gave me the opportunity to develop skills in both. With this role I can focus on the technical and be at the leading edge. The role allows me to be involved in the early stages of project design and help to influence the products we develop and deploy.
RM is a good place to work. For me, trying to balance work and four children of my own, the Company has been very understanding and supportive. They have allowed me to work at home when needed and fit my commitments around this. The new My Work Blend@RM also allows greater flexibility and people are more open minded as to how people work and what works for them.
RM is a fun place to work surrounded by good people with a good vision and strong leadership. Everyone is very approachable and we have a strong team ethic.
