Global Operations Director
I joined RM at the start of 2020 and during the first six months – pre-Covid – I managed to get out to meet our customers right across the UK, and our staff in India, England and Scotland. Then lockdown came, and the organisation switched to complete remote working. Fortunately most of the operational work that we do for schools can be done remotely, but this was a new experience for our customers, and we very quickly had to switch to supporting them in delivering education to their pupils, remotely.
Before I joined RM I was Chief Technology Officer for the Department for Education; I’ve always worked in education and technology throughout my career. I’m passionate about how technology enables learners to achieve and organisations to improve. My first job was in teaching, where I was keen to experiment with technology and I was involved in some national schemes promoting this.
I knew of RM from my early career when they played a role in providing schools with technology and devices. I had also come across RM later through some project work and so when the recruitment team got in touch, I was attracted by the organisation’s heritage and the role it has played in the development of UK EdTech. Before considering joining, I read background information on the RM website, Glassdoor and other financial reports and got a strong impression of a financially robust, people-focussed company, experts in education technology. I was really excited about joining the organisation at this point in time when technology is more critical than ever to assessment, learning and running educational establishments.
I think the future for RM looks exciting. We are just at the point where we are bringing together our software and services expertise and I am fortunate to be a part of the leadership team developing our future strategy. It also coincides with a market that due to Covid, has recognised the importance of technology and the value of working with larger organisations – like RM – to help them do their job effectively. Our vision is about enabling educational outcomes on a global level and with a footprint in many parts of the world, we are driving modernisation of assessment and partnering with education establishments, awarding organisations, governments and professional associations to help them exploit the benefits of digital technologies.
Covid has brought its challenges, but overnight we were able to adapt and we’ve definitely become more collaborative. Our culture has changed for the better, with everyone working remotely, communications are strong and feedback from customers tells us we are getting it right.
