Support Engineer

I joined RM at a time in my career where I needed to make some life changes in order to provide myself a better work life balance. I had been working in London and spending a considerable amount of time commuting. Having taken time to reflect on what gave me most job satisfaction, I wanted to return to a role within IT Support, an industry I had left 10 years previous. The role at RM was not just within education, a sector I consider to be extremely worthwhile, it was for a site based engineer at a local secondary school in close proximity to my home. Shortly after joining, it quickly became apparent this was in fact the role I’d been seeking, providing a breath of fresh air and a return of my passion to excel at work.

Both RM and the school made me feel very welcomed. The strong relationship I have built with the school has been a real success and my fellow RM peers are always on hand to support me. There is a vast amount of knowledge within the depth of the business, which I can easily access through a number of online collaborative tools and groups, so whilst being the only RM engineer on site, you are never quite alone. Being part of RM, you are part of a community. When I joined I knew my IT knowledge would need refreshing and RM have made this easy by providing the necessary support from the outset.

Day to day duties require me to support the school with any technical issues reported for a vast variety of equipment throughout the entire campus. Additional to this, I am the hands-on engineer for all RM related project work, of which a really interesting project has been the Bring Your Own Device scheme that the school operates. My role as a Customer Support Engineer also requires a large amount of relationship management, thus not only being a trusted adviser to the school but also a mediator for RM remote services team.

Most recently we have been preparing the school’s Microsoft 365 tenancy to utilise Teams for a mix of distant and blended learning. Initial focus has been on upcoming Year 10 students, having just selected their options for GCSE studies. The school is committed to ensuring students are supported as best as possible during these uncertain times, looking to engage with them and provide online assistance throughout the summer. Creating dedicated Microsoft Teams for subject classes will provide a virtual learning platform that will benefit the teaching and learning experience. It has been exiting to work on this project in conjunction with leading members of staff here at the school, giving me the opportunity to get to grips with this new technology.

The gratitude is evident on the smiles of both staff and students, and knowing I helped resolve their issues makes me want to comeback tomorrow and do it all over again.
